AbstractThis book is part of a series of case studies that demonstrate better ways to educate Ohio's students. The case study is part of the Transforming Learning Communities (TLC) Project, designed to support significant school-reform efforts among Ohio's elementary, middle, and high schools. The text describes the 12 Ohio schools that were selected for the Project from a sample of over 500 schools. The report outlines the process in transforming learning communities, focusing on the tradition of change, on strategic actions, and on enduring tensions. It describes how the 12 TLC schools were chosen and provides information on school locations, numbers, resources, racial/ethnic composition of students and staff, school performance, and a comparison of TLC schools. The book discusses the reconstruction of the nature of the teachers' work and how classroom-centered strategic actions, the redefining of students' work, the reorientation of teaching practices, and the development of cross-disciplinary learning experiences changed the schools. It describes the transformation of teachers' work lives, the extension of collegial development, the expansion of shared responsibility and the structuring of joint responsibility and decentralized control. The book closes with the schools' strategies for working with parents and other stakeholders, and offers advice on how the schools developed the habit of change. (RJM)
